Talks with Tory Part 2

Welcome to the conclusion of the interview with Tory. We wrap up with a few questions about the ending of Emergence (Haven’t read Emergence? Pick up a copy using this link today!)
Oh, and don’t you worry, I asked about that striking image.
“Was that what the tower really looked like?”
“That’s really how the tower looked at the reservation. Their plans to build more terrified the SAR.”
“But I have to ask, we’ve all been told that it didn’t really shoot lasers. Is that true?”
“Oh, the tip was an energy weapon. There is no question about that. We kind of went cartoonish with the way that looked. Same with the walls around the reservation.”
“But there were walls.”
“Yes. They upgraded from the fencing and guards and drones to a more solid barrier should anyone manage to escape the tower. Not that anyone ever did. They built a prison. Melani’s story can attest to that.”
I did not want to bring Melani up, considering what happened to her and the others there. Since Tory breached the subject, I asked her if she covered Melani’s story in the sequel novel.
“I give you an idea, but I don’t broach Melani’s or anyone else’s stories directly. Not for the Abnormals at the reservation. I want to respect their privacy and if anyone wants to detail their time in that tower, that is up to them. I only talk about what I saw.”
I decided to shift the conversation to the final topic.
“The speech.”
“The speech.”
“So dense, so beautiful, so perfect. How long did it take you to write it? You detail in the book it wasn’t long, but I want to hear it from you.”
“Yeah, it really came to me that quickly. I searched my archive of quotes to pull from to aid me. You’ll find a large mixture of many voices in that speech, but I wove them all together in a short span. Just a few days.”
“And you managed to memorize it while at war. How’d you do that?”
“Ha! That I don’t know. All I know is when it came time to speak and the camera was on, I didn’t feel like myself. I just let Fate guide me and that was that. It was pretty close to what I had written down. I hit all the bullet points at least.”
“Yeah, that was a strange few paragraphs. People have been wondering about it. You describe a feeling of something inside coming to the forefront. You felt like you were controlled. You weren’t yourself. Have you come to any revelation on that after the fact?”
“Not really. I really don’t understand it. I’ve spoken with the religious folks about their accounts that I cover in Fall of the West and I think it was Fate, God, something like that.”
“Some might say that was someone else speaking through you and not you directly.”
“Oh, no, I stand by every word. They were mine, I just had help when delivering them to the world. I’m glad I did since I bet I would have choked.”
“I don’t think you would have choked.”
“I came a long way throughout Emergence, but I was still struggling with self-doubt, with confidence. The woman I am now, that wasn’t me. People have to realize that we learn and grow and change and the world and people and environment help shape us. That was a big step for me. I’m glad someone helped me speak what I wanted to say.”
“And they were your words.”
“Yes! Why is that so hard to believe?”
There you have it folks! That is all to share from Tory for now. I hope you enjoyed it and the sneak peeks into her journal.
