Listen in as Jeff Mayhugh and I, Craig T. Stewart, discuss our thoughts on Beyond Good an Evil!
Synopsis:
Beyond Good and Evil is a book of aphorisms, which challenge and critique the status quo of moral philosophy, pursuing something beyond morality in the process. Each chapter focuses on a group or idea as Nietzsche argues that bias in the field is stunting the growth of philosophy. In critiquing philosophy in his time, Nietzsche also notes the poignant zeitgeist throughout Europe at the time, and hints at where certain beliefs and cultural differences might lead.
Recurring (core) themes that our discussion points will relate to:
Will to Power
Recurring phrase that Nietzsche uses to describe an irrational force, found in all individuals, that can be channeled toward different ends.
Good and Evil
Recurring phrase and reason for the name of the book!
Hint of Future Germany
Nietzsche hints at the Anti-Semitism, Nationalism, “supermen” and other bits of German Zeitgeist in the 1880s that manifest in Nazism 50 years later.
