I read this a while ago, so my memory is definitely not the best. This is one of those books that made me make several faces while driving to work as I listened to the audiobook. While I agree with what you said about the balance between realism and fiction, I believe the plot benefited from emphasizing the latter in this case. The craziness in this book wouldn't have kept me hooked if the plot were made as realistic as possible.

About the many loose ends of the story, it does seem like that was intentionally created to throw the reader off and keep the suspense up long enough. My only issue is that there wasn't enough closure at the end. It felt like a good page or two was torn off the last chapter.
